The Ghana Startup Awards came off at the British Council on the 11th of May, 2016 at 4pm. The event hosted over 300 startups, policy makers, startup support service providers and startup ecosystem stakeholders from all over Ghana.

The Ghana Startup Awards honoured hardworking, innovative and deserving startups in 16 different categories.


  • Arts, Culture & Tourism Startup of the Year


KP Photography is a photography agency which creates Creative Pictures telling its own story headed by Kafui Praise. They have been behind amazing projects across the country and have made a mark for their works through extreme professionalism.


  • Agribusiness Startup of the Year


Farmerline is a Ghanaian social enterprise specialising in the development of web platforms and mobile applications in order to disseminate and collect agricultural data to/from smallholder farmers and has successfully reached over 200,000 small-scale farmers across four (4) countries.


  • Education Startup of the Year


eCampus is a self-paced education platform for anyone who wants to learn and prepare for Mathematics examinations at the JHS, SHS and Tertiary levels. eCampus is built on all technology interface, hence it’s availabilities on the Web, Android, Blackberry, iOS etc


  • Banking & Finance Startup of the Year


Mpower is the safest and easiest way to pay and get paid online in Ghana. Their service allows anyone to pay in any way they prefer, including through debit cards, bank accounts and mobile wallets. With MPower, businesses are able to accept all forms of payments.


  • Technology Startup of the Year


McAbe Solutions is an IT company that provides IT support services to startup companies, as well as small and medium scale enterprises, whose size does not justify hiring the services of full-time IT personnel or setting up an IT department with all its infrastructure and related costs.


  • Manufacturing Startup of the Year


A car manufacturing company with an assembly plant whose range of cars includes both electric saloon and electric four wheel drives. The electric SUVs are called Nkunimdie and Otumfuo with an electric range of Kantanka Onatafuo 4×4 pickups.


  • Health Startup of the Year


Provides biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, parasitology, toxicology and haematology testing as well as testing for food handlers, food processing companies and food marketing companies to ensure food safety and prevent food fraud.


  • Fashion Startup of the Year


“If we cannot make our own shoes, then when shall we make our own planes?” Fred Deegbe Jr. CEO of Heel The World. Heel The World (HTW) is a social enterprise and footwear brand that works to empower Ghanaian startup companies.


  • Media Startup of the Year


Ameyaw Debrah Media is a company run by ace Ghanaian blogger, Ameyaw Debrah. The media outfit manages www.yen.com.gh & www. ameyawdebrah.com and offers other consultancy services from their great wealth of experience in the Ghanaian new media space.


  • Food Processing Startup of the Year


Wanjo is an indigenous business started by Yaganoma Baatuolkuu in an effort to stem the extinction of African indigenous wild plants and fruits through the creation of food products that can be marketed to the modern palate. They have gone ahead to win funding from investors.


  • Social Enterprise Startup of the Year


Soronko Solutions seeks to equip rural Ghanaian youth with problem-solving skills by studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics through an interactive supplementary curriculum and apprenticeship program. Hence their flagship project Tech Need Girls.

Regina Agyare is a Ghanaian Software Developer and founder of Soronko Solutions, a software development company in Ghana. She was unveiled as the 2016 Vlisco Brand Ambassador. In an interview with the CNN’s African Start-Up she is described as a Ghanaian tech guru who wants to develop the next generation of women in technology.

Below are the profiles of all the 2016 Jury Members.

Ato Ulzen-AppiahAto Ulzen-Appiah is an entrepreneur, manager, social media champion and blogger. Ato
studied at MIT and Stanford in civil engineering and management disciplines. He’s the director at the GhanaThink Foundation which mobilizes and organizes talent for the primary benefit of Ghana.

He’s a member of the Global Shapers Accra Hub, part of the World Economic Forum community. He worked at Rancard as product manager building new revenue services off its platform. He worked at Google as a program manager building sustainable tech communities in Africa.

Ekow Mensah is the Founder & currently the CEO of The African Network Of Entrepreneurs (TANOE), a social enterprise that seeks among other things to EKOW MENSAHassist African entrepreneurs to build sustainable and globally competitive indigenous businesses.

Named amongst the 50 Most Influential Under 40 Individuals in Ghana, Ekow Mensah is a serial entrepreneur who has developed a wealth of knowledge and experience in the MSME market, both as a practitioner and a multiple business owner.

Ekow is an entrepreneurship, leadership & youth empowerment activist, an innovator, a life & personal development coach and an inspirational speaker, who through his networks, has secured many speaking engagements and is well respected as an emerging global leader in Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Empowerment.

Fiifi BaidooFiifi Baidoo is a Web Enthusiast and has worked in the internet industry since 2003 with years of experience in LAMP, GEO tools, SEO, and Product Development. He blogs about the internet, social media, new technologies, platforms and apps in Africa. He is also known for his avid interest in mapping technologies and trains technology communities on these subjects.

He is the co-founder and CTO of iSpace Foundation, a startup support organisation which provides businesses, startups and entrepreneurs a space with good internet connectivity, resources, connections and product or service training and is currently the only innovation hub where tech and creative industry stakeholders can meet and exchange ideas.

DARYL KWAWUDaryl Kwawu is a Broadcast Journalist with the Business Desk of Joy FM, a leading radio station in Accra.

He anchors the Joy Business Report at 1pm every weekday and is presenter of the award-winning Joy Business Van which features startups and discusses issues aimed at empowering startups. He joined Joy FM from Citi FM where he worked as a news anchor and reporter.

Daryl previously worked as News Editor at Radio Univers 105.7fm, Ghana’s leading campus – based radio station where he started his career in broadcast journalism in 2007 serving as a student volunteer.

In 2010, Daryl was promoted to the position of News Editor.

Daryl graduated from the University of Ghana in 2011, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in French and Sociology.

JORGE APPIAHJorge Appiah is a Kumasi-based techprenuer , founder and Executive Director of the student-focused innovative and solution-seeking community, Creativity Group.

As an energy entrepreneur and renewable energy expert, he also co-founded two start-ups; Invent Energy Solutions and QuadSolar. He is also a research fellow at the world renowned energy research center; The Energy Center at KNUST.

He is currently the CEO of Kumasi Hive an innovation, Tech & entrepreneurship-support community and space in Kumasi which provides needed support for the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

He is the current Curator of the Global Shapers Kumasi Hub

FELIX KLUTSEMr Felix Klutse is a multiple award-winning international business journalist with over 14 years’ experience in various fields of journalism. He is currently the Managing Editor of Business Day, a 48-page business and financial newspaper in Ghana, which has a subsidiary in Nigeria.

Before joining the publication, Mr Klutse was the Managing Editor of Ghana Business & Finance, an upscale monthly business magazine, which focuses on serving the information needs of Ghana’s top-tier media readership. He also worked at Daily Guide Newspaper as a Business Editor, Economic Tribune Newspaper as Managing Editor, as well as The Statesman Newspaper, and Information Services Department.

He is a fellow of Mandela Washington Fellowship program by President Barack Obana and International Institute for Journalism and has received notable awards such as 2011 Citi Journalistic Excellence Award, Print Journalist of the Year 2012, 2014 Best Business and Financial Journalist, Best Reporter in Agribusiness and the Best Reporter in Finance etc from various prestiguius institutions.

HENRY ASARE AGYEIHenry Agyei Asare is an entrepreneur and an investment banker with over 14-year experience in the banking and financial service industry. He is the CEO of Prime2Prime Ideas Limited, a solution driven consultancy which offer solutions in Research, Events and Training and Advisory – Investment and Accounting support. At Prime2Prime, Henry is responsible for strategic planning and direction.

Prior to Prime2Prime, he worked as a head of branch, manager – business development and later as credit manager at Ideal Finance between June 2014 and July 2015, served as Branch Chief Executive of Beige Capital Savings and loans and Akuapem Rural Bank. His contribution to the companies he has been associated and worked with has been one that will promote long-term development of the business and is well vested in corporate governance issues, team building, and strategic planning.

His entrepreneurial acumen has led him to many speaking engagement as a lay preacher, career coach and a motivational speaker. He has been involved in some corporate restructuring and strategic planning sessions in his career life. He has also spearheaded implementation plans and operational strategies for some start-ups and established companies.

Mansa Ayisi OkyereMansa Ayisi-Okyere is the Executive Secretary for African Entrepreneurs Hub. A non-profit organisation she’s helped build from conception, with a focus on encouraging youth entrepreneurship.

At the age of 21, Mansa founded her first company and subsequently, has gone on to build a reputation as skillful professional with exceptional abilities in business development and fundraising.

She is a firm believer in the power of entrepreneurship and sees it as the vehicle to drive development in Africa. She strong affirms, If we teach youths to value entrepreneurship and integrity a lot of our societal gripes will be resolved.

Mansa is married with 3 children.

As an entrepreneur, he is the Managing Partner of Blaq Qode, a 360Degree creative service provider, a co-founder of Brand Interactive Group Africa (BIG Africa) a multi-faceted branding and marketing solutions firm and one of the leading content and integrated marketing firms in Africa.

He is the Co-Founder of Idea Factory Africa, a global African Community and a Social Enterprise, welcoming young people from every discipline and culture who seek to influence the world through NOVEL IDEAS.

He has lead and successfully launched campaigns with some of Africa’s finest entertainers including B.E.T Award Winner and arguably Africa’s greatest rap sensation currently Sarkodie, R2bees D Black, Davido,Wizkid,2Face, Ice Prince, M.I and International super stars like T Pain, Mario, Fabulous, Trey Songs and Amber Rose.

He has also lead social media campaigns and event projects for multi-national companies such as Vodafone Ghana, RLG, MTN, Voltic and the likes.

ALAIN GBEASORAlain Gbeasor is the Board Chairman of the Association of Young Entrepreneurs and the Director of External Affairs of the biggest ICT expo in Ghana dubbed Africa Mobile ICT Expo.

He is an astute business entrepreneur, who runs the GESUS Group of Companies, a fully owned diversified industrial chemicals company in Ghana.

He is also the chairman of the Millennium Investment Fund and Vice President of the Centre for Social Democracy. He is also a fellow of the African Good Governance Institute.

EMMANUEL LESLIE ADDAEEmmanuel Leslie Addae is an Active Citizen, a social entrepreneur and a business leader and Curator for TedxAccra, the biggest ted event in Ghana which has gives platform for very influential Ghanaians to share ideas.

He has taken a leading role promoting “Ideas Worth Spreading” in his community Labone and then expanded to cover the whole city of Accra which seeks to create spaces for hope and possibilities for the future leaders of Ghana.

Before TedxAccra, Leslie co-founded a multiple award winning Tech Company, ProMobile GH and is currently an MBA Candidate at Webster University.

Prince AkpahPrince Akpah is an African brewed in Ghana, who is passionate about Making a Difference through Determination and Hard Work in order to live an eternal Legacy for this continent.

He is a young change maker who wears so many hats as a blogger, volunteer, online publisher, documentary producer and a Social Entrepreneur.

He launched his first award winning pet project, Be A Girl in 2013 and has continued to unroll others such as The Journey So Far, Ghana Social Media Rankings, Africa Youth Awards, Christmas Entrepreneurship Seminar etc

His passion is to be a significant change agent, so he extends his experience to volunteer in supporting other young change makers across the globe.

He is a member of the Accra Hub of Global Shaper Community of the World Economic Forum and was named by the British Council Ghana as an Active Citizen in 2016.

He is the Founder and MD of Avance Media, a leading reputed media rating establishment in Ghana.
